Ken Heathcote
For those of you who don’t know Ken Heathcote, he’s a proud Boltonian and a pioneering figure in the UK fitness industry. In the 1950s, he founded one of the country’s first modern gyms, and played a key role in shaping the health and fitness movement. Deeply passionate about his hometown, he dedicated his career to promoting health and wellbeing in Bolton and beyond. Ken was instrumental in establishing industry standards and advocating the benefits of strength training, leaving a lasting impact on the UK gym industry.
Ken turns 90 on July 18th this year and together with his grandson Sam, will attempt to swim 90 lengths of a pool and the equivalent in ‘open water’. Sam will also be lifting 90,000lbs in weights and playing nine sets of tennis all in one day. They are both doing this to raise money for three charities and would love the people of Bolton to get behind them by taking on their own challenges. See below for more info.
The Not Out at 90 Challenge
The Not Out at 90 challenge isn’t just about celebrating Ken’s milestone though—it’s an opportunity for everyone to join in and show the world that fitness is for everyone, no matter your age or ability. Here’s how you can get involved:

- Participate virtually: Join from anywhere by completing your own challenge and sharing it online to inspire others with the #NotOutat90
- Create your own challenge: It’s not about the number; it’s about supporting the cause.
