Becoming more active helps you feel physically better, boosts the clarity of your thinking and supports your mental health. Keeping active also reduces the risk of injury from strains, falls and accidents and helps you recover from illness more quickly.

The following sections will inspire you to get fitter and healthier, so what are you waiting for, let’s get moving.

It doesn’t matter how fast or how far you go, we all start somewhere. Jogging is a fantastic way to get your heart rate up, and best of all you can get out and jog whenever you like, wherever you like. There's lots of clubs and groups you can join or if you’d prefer you can get out there alone.

    Meet 3 times a week for organised runs and related activities, everyone is welcome, no matter what ability, just take your happy face!
  • Bolton United Harriers & Athletics Club
    Bolton United Harriers & Athletics Club is the town’s oldest running club and have been running, jumping and throwing since 1908. All ages and abilities are welcome to join and become part of the harriers family. Whether you are looking to get fit or want to be competitive at your chosen level, there is a group for everyone.
  • parkrun
    parkruns are free, weekly, community events all around the world. Whether you walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate, you can learn new skills and enhance your health and happiness in the great outdoors whilst making new friends, feeling part of your local community and improving your fitness.

Walking is great for both mental and physical wellbeing, you can do it alone or with friends. Walks can be long or short and you choose how hard or easy you go. Here are links to some local walking groups.

  • GM Walking
    A hub of information to help you walk, amble, stroll, mooch and connect. There’s lots of tips and resources to help you make walking part of your everyday life
  • Ramblers
    Ramblers want people to enjoy the countryside and so produce and advertise led walks programmes. These walks range from short 3 to 5 miles in the local area to coach rambles that provide 5 to 12 mile walks around northern England including the Lake District, Westmorland and the Yorkshire Dales and down to North Wales and the Peak District. They participate in “back to walking” initiatives and there is something for everyone.
  • Walking for Health
    Walking for Health walks are led by trained Volunteer Walk Leaders. The walks range in length from 30 minutes - 90 minutes. They are short, accessible walks over easy terrain.
  • Bolton HF Walking Club
    The club’s main aim is to foster enjoyment and appreciation of the countryside which they do principally through a regular and varied programme of walks sent out to members every two months. This is a very friendly club that also likes to meet for social events – an Annual Dinner, Ceilidh, President’s Day, Boxing Day Reviver, New Year Lunch and many more informal lunch meetings.
  • Age UK
    The well established '50+ Walking Club' is co-ordinated by group members themselves. An attractive and varied programme of walks takes place each week on alternate Mondays and Tuesdays. All walks are carried out at a reasonable pace, they do not race and avoid hills whenever possible. Monday walks are generally about 3 to 4 miles, and Tuesday walks are generally about 5 to 6 miles.

A gentle waltz or an energetic Zumba, it all counts. In your living room, in your garden or in a group, who cares? Dancing is a great way to have fun and get active at the same time, we all smile when we dance, go on give it a try.

Swimming is a fantastic way to get active and it burns lots of calories too. Swimming can provide an excellent workout, tone muscles and improve overall health and fitness. You don’t need to be able to swim like a fish to get started either, whatever your current level is, doing something is better than doing nothing. Check out some of the local clubs below to add a social element or if you prefer, visit your local pool and start to make waves.

  • Aquastars Swim Academy
    Aquastars Swim Academy is a privately owned family run swim school based at Ladybridge High School in Bolton.   • Bolton Metro Swim Squad
    Bolton Metro's mission is to promote and encourage high quality swimming performance across the Bolton region. As a performance age group squad, they enter swim meets all over the country, up to and including National Championships. The squad has also travelled to a number of European countries to compete.
  • Horwich Leisure Centre Amateur Swimming Club
    Horwich Leisure Centre Amateur Swimming Club (or HLCASC) is justly proud of its reputation as of one of the best swimming clubs in the North West. They are primarily a competitive swimming club and as such swim in several different local and national swimming leagues for different age groups and standards of swimming. They are keen to encourage any swimmers, regardless of age or ability.

You don’t need to be the next Bradley Wiggins or Lance Armstrong to get on your bike. Cycling is a great way to get active and get out and about in the great outdoors. There a wide variety of routes to suit all abilities available, cycling is a great low impact way to get active.

We all know Bolton can be a little damp at times, luckily we have a wide range of indoor activities available that you can enjoy. From local leisure centres to world leading sports facilities, there really is something for everyone.

  • North West Warriors
    Run by Paul, Janice and Danni Smith, North West Warriors is considered to be one of the best Martial Arts centres in Bolton. They are fully equipped including a boxing ring. Offering classes for all ages and abilities. As well as fitness Martial Arts is great for self confidence, awareness, discipline, focus and respect.
  • Premier Boxing Club
    Premier Boxing Club is a community sports and fitness club run by fully ABA qualified coaches and Bolton council, ENGLAND BOXING affiliated.
  • Metro Boxing
    The home of many champions, Metro Boxing are a welcoming club that cater for all abilities. Get fit and learn to box for fun or competitively if that’s your thing.

  • Wave Adventure
    Wave Adventure is an Award Winning Charity run by part time staff, freelance coaches & volunteers. They are a charity located in Bolton and provide a fun and supportive environment for members to take part in team sports and group activities.
